ROTC Programs

  • The Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) was founded in 1916. It is a college program that lets students enjoy a traditional university experience while training to become military officers—with financial support and a guaranteed leadership career after graduation. Students attend a regular university while also taking ROTC classes, leadership labs, and physical training sessions alongside their degree. Offered at more than 1,000 colleges and universities across the United States, unlike military academies, ROTC students attend a traditional college first, giving more flexibility in choosing schools, majors, and the overall college experience.

  • There are many reasons to explore JROTC and ROTC programs. Some students join to fulfill the personal goal of following in the footsteps of a family member. Some join for the professional opportunities they have upon graduation. Others are drawn to the ROTC programs out of a sense of patriotism and a desire to serve their country.

  • Students who are motivated by leadership, discipline, and long-term purpose, and who are willing to challenge themselves in college while preparing for a career of service. More specifically, ROTC candidates often are:

    • Academically motivated
    • Interested in leadership and service
    • Physically and mentally disciplined
    • Goal-oriented and mature

  • An opportunity to develop technical and leadership skills

    • Financial support for college
    • A clear career path after graduation
    • Leadership development
    • A traditional college experience
    • Physical fitness and personal growth
    • Opportunities for service and impact
    • Commission as a military officer

It is important to remember that in exchange for scholarship support (if accepted), ROTC students agree to serve as officers in the military after graduation for a set number of years. This commitment varies depending on the branch and scholarship type, but it is a clearly defined educational and career path from the beginning.
